The Sqallija Terracotta set of Lazarus Tiles was salvaged from Triq San Pawl, San Pawl il-Baħar. These striking three-dimensional tiles, known locally as Ta’ Palermo, were a style favoured by Sicilian nobility and widely used throughout their palazzos, including residences in Malta.
This distinctive encaustic design can still be admired in several historic locations, most notably at Villa Messina, the country house of the Count of Messina. Elegantly framed in steel, the tile preserves a refined chapter of Maltese and Sicilian architectural heritage.
